A few months ago some of the K2 teachers attended a workshop about Pop Up Playgrounds.
"Pop-Up Adventure Playgrounds are free, public celebrations of child-directed play, stocked with loose parts (such as cardboard boxes, fabric, tape and string) and staffed by playworkers. An introductory version of the classic adventure playground model, they gently introduce themes of risk and freedom by welcoming people of all ages and abilities to play together."
I loved seeing the children in action, knowing how important child-led play is. Please read the following from The Amazing Benefits of Child-Directed play Excerpt from Pop-Up Adventure Play's P.L.A.Y. Guide by Anna Housley Juster, Ph.D.:
Years of research show conclusively that child-directed play... fosters the development of the whole child – children's cognitive, social, emotional, and physical skills; contributes to school success; and is a necessary and important part of every child's life.
When children play this way, they:
~ Figure out things for themselves.
~ Learn how to take healthy risks.
~ Find innovative ways to think about the world and how it works, based on their own self-led, intrinsically motivated interests.
~ Practice necessary skills such as overcoming obstacles, creative problem solving (on their own or with other children), communicating their feelings effectively with others, and working with those who may have difference points of view.
~ Experience the joy of self discovery, the thrill of being able to pursue their own creative ideas without the dear of failure that usually arises when there is one, predetermined way to be “right” or to “win”.
Yesterday afternoon, the K2 teachers gathered the resources that we had been collecting over the last few weeks and set up a mini pop-up playground in sections of the bus bay. As much as possible, we used recycled or unused items that we already had at school. Setting up was fun!
Today we had a Service Day in class and created gift wrap for the Chinese New Year Gifts that Grade One students will be taking to Happy Lodge, home for the elderly.
